Banoffee High

Chanel favourite, Banoffee, on style and sounds …

There’s something about Martha Brown aka Banoffee.
The singer’s fresh-faced beauty offset by peroxide blonde hair exudes a sense of personal style ready to rival the likes of FKA Twigs and Grimes. Her mix of talent, taste and a killer look made her a shoo-in to attain the interlocking-Cs seal of approval from the almighty arbiter of hot new talent: Chanel. We caught up with Banoffee and played dress ups.
[Warning: Do don’t ask the artist if Banoffee Pie is her favourite dessert, please].

‘O How would you describe your sound?
Hmmm… my music is something I find hard to describe, I think most musicians find this a challenge. I would say it’s very honest, synth and vocal driven with hints towards R&B and dance music. It’s way more minimal than both those genres though.

‘O Where is home?
Home is Melbourne, I’m split between my studio in Clifton Hill and my bed in East Brunswick. Most of my time is spent on the road at the moment though, playing shows or making videos / photo shoots. A fun and hectic life I’m very lucky to have.

‘O You have an amazing offbeat individual style. Who are your favourite designers, international and local?
I love tough and durable clothing and I’m also super into ridiculously impractical fun costumes. Japanese label mercibeaucoup is a fave, ASSK Paris (Australian girls rocking it in France) Pageant, Bernard Wilhelm, mamadoux, Julian Zigerli and Andrea Crews are all current loves of mine.

‘O What has been the highlight of 2015?
My launch in Melbourne. I’ve never felt so supported and had so much fun.

‘O Where can we see you perform next and listen to your music?
I’m playing at Off the Grid festival, Falls Festival (Lorne), Laneway Festival (Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney) and supporting Kelela in January in Sydney.
My latest EP is out on Spotify and iTunes and I have a bunch of cool videos for future release.

‘O What are you most looking forward to in 2016?
My Laneway tour, and releasing my clothing collaboration with Pageant.
