Nominated for his fifth Oscar, can Leonardo DiCaprio’s lead role in the frontier epic The Revenant be the ticket to finally securing the golden statuette?
The lucky streak continues for Alejandro González Iñárrit, last year the Mexican producer nabbed the Oscar for Birdman. His grizzly epic, The Revenant starring the rugged DiCaprio, has dominated the Oscar field at this morning’s announcement with 12 nominations.
Mad Max: Fury Road snapped ten nominations, while The Martian garnered seven and Spotlight, a film which portrays the newspaper investigation into abuse cover up in the Catholic Church, collected six.
Among the contenders for the Best Actor gong are Matt Damon for The Martian, Michael Fassbender in his role as Steve Jobs, Eddie Redmayne for playing The Danish Girl and Brian Cranston in the titular role of persecuted screenwriter Trumbo.
It remains to be seen who walks away with the gold but it is hoped by his legion’s of fans, that this year might be finally the year of the Leo.
